NS Pocahontas District

NS's Pocahontas District runs through some of the best mainline Appalachian Mountain scenery you can get, with plenty of old bridges and tunnels as the line cuts through the West Virginia mountains. Even today, it still has plenty of active coal branch lines.

Evans Overlook

NS Pocahontas District, Milepost 405.0

A westbound intermodal with a heritage unit and conversion unit leading at this location
Looking east towards Bluefield
The helpers of an eastbound coal shoving hard around the curve at this location
Evan's Overlook is one of those spots that's really hard to find but an absolute gem. There's only parking for a couple cars here and not much room to stand next to the stone railing, but the reward is an amazing shot of westbounds especially in the fall. You'll have almost no warning for eastbounds, but they do blow the horn going into the tunnel so there is some. Most eastbounds will have manned helpers to get up the grade near Switchback.
